A critical eye on communication, by Tom Poldre

About Tom…

Having been in the communications and training businesses for over 30 years, Tom now feels a certain freedom to unleash his unfiltered commentary. Based in Bangkok, Tom is the Director of Aziam Burson-Marsteller’s Active Learning practice. He figures that he has provided communications coaching and crisis management training to more than 3,500 executives throughout Asia and in his native Canada. This complements his work on award-winning campaigns in advertising, public relations and corporate communications, across many cultures and sectors.

Since his days in Toronto agencies as a writer, to PR stints in Hongkong and Singapore, and throughout various corporate gigs in Canada, Tom has relished his role as resident wing-nut and designated devil’s advocate. Some would call this attention-seeking behavior. The fun side has consisted of mentoring talent; making radio and television commercials; designing multimedia consumer launches, as well as brand creation and nourishment.  The serious side has meant managing communications across numerous issues — from climate change to corruption to closures – to municipal emergencies and a series of notorious gangland shootings in a couple of very public places.

Tom has an MBA from York University’s Schulich School of Business, and has taught both Media Relations and Integrated Marketing Communications programs at the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto (there’s that attention-seeking behavior again). He apologizes in advance for any obscure North American pop cultural references.
